Engraving and Die-stamping

Our engraving is done by the hand of a skilled engraver. It should not be confused with machine engraving which is the product of a computer. Because of the bespoke nature of the job, hand engraving takes about 4 weeks (machine engraving takes considerably less time) and costs a lot more than thermography.

You will initially receive a 'laser' proof which is a proof set on a computer. The aim of this proof is for you to check all the spelling, sizes, layout and to give you a closer idea of what the finished product will look like before the expensive process is started. Once you have approved this, we will hand engrave a copper plate. This is what a section of the copper plate looks like:



When we have completed the plate, we will send you a rubbing if it has been hand engraved.



The rubbing is in reverse, that is to say the script is white against a black background. This is your last chance to check the job. Mistakes noticed at this point are rare, and if the customer's fault, are chargeable.

When you receive your invitations you are also presented with the copper plate, which we can arrange to have made into a beautiful dish for posterity. This is the plate we have used in the printing process in a vast stamping machine. Altough seldom badly marked, do not expect a fine piece of silverware. The text often goes up the side onto the lip, and the text is in reverse of course. Our silver trays take about 4 weeks to make and come with feet:
